El Objetivo de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS) 9 busca construir infraestructuras resilientes, promover la industrialización sostenible y fomentar la innovación. La industria manufacturera es clave para la consecución de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible. El sector industrial genera puestos de trabajo, ingresos e innovación, e influye en otras partes de la economía.

La industrialización no ha progresado uniformemente en todo el mundo. Por ejemplo, el
sector manufacturero en América Latina y el Caribe (ALC), ha experimentado un descenso en su importancia económica relativa durante las últimas décadas, y su valor alcanzó un mínimo
histórico, representando sólo el 12,6% del producto interno bruto (PIB).

Este informe contribuye a los esfuerzos de la ONUDI para difundir información sobre el ODS 9 entre sus Estados Miembros y apoyarlos en la implementación de la Agenda 2030, enfocándose especialmente en el logro del ODS 9 y basándose en el monitoreo de los datos y la evidencia empírica.

El propósito de este informe es presentar una visión general de los avances llevados a cabo por los países de la región de América Latina y el Caribe para alcanzar el ODS 9 sobre la
construcción de infraestructuras resilientes, la promoción de la industrialización sostenible y el fomento de la innovación. Asimismo, este informe pretende destacar las áreas en las que los países de la región han avanzado para fomentar el intercambio de conocimientos y buenas prácticas, partiendo de la noción de que la industria tiene el potencial de transformar el modelo de desarrollo de América Latina y el Caribe.

El objetivo de esta publicación es múltiple:

• aumentar el acceso a los datos e informes oficiales y dar a conocer la información
  relacionada con los ODS de la Agenda 2030, en particular el ODS 9;
• describir el estado actual de los países de América Latina y el Caribe en cuanto a los
  indicadores del ODS 9;
• destacar las acciones y áreas clave que contribuyen a una mejor recuperación
  pospandémica en la región; e
• introducir una nueva iniciativa regional de la
  ONUDI para América Latina y el Caribe.

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9 aims to build resilient infrastructure, promote
sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. With manufacturing at its core, is
key to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Manufacturing plays a fundamental role in supporting resilience and driving shared prosperity. The industrial sector generates jobs, income, and innovation, and influences other parts of the economy.

Industrialization has not, however, progressed uniformly across the world. The manufacturing
sector in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), for example, has experienced a decline in
relative economic significance in recent decades, and its value reached a historic low,
accounting for only 12.6 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021.

This report contributes to UNIDO’s efforts to disseminate information on SDG 9 among its
Member States and to support them in implementing the 2030 Agenda with a special
focus on achieving the SDG 9 based on datadriven and evidence-based monitoring.

The purpose of this report is to present an overview of the progress countries in the Latin
America and Caribbean region have made towards achieving SDG 9 on building resilient
infrastructure, promoting sustainable industrialization and fostering innovation.
Additionally, this report seeks to highlight the areas in which the region’s countries have made
progress to foster the exchange of knowledge and good practices based on the notion that
industry has the potential of transforming the development model of Latin America and the
Caribbean.

The aim of this publication is multi-fold:

• increase access to official data and reports while raising awareness of information
  related to the SDGs, in particular, SDG 9;
• describe the current state of Latin American and Caribbean countries in terms of SDG 9
  indicators;
• highlight key actions and areas that contribute to a better post-pandemic recovery in the region; and
• introduce UNIDO’s new regional approach to Latin America and the Caribbean.
